Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Week 1

On Tuesday, the students walked into the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! 

We immediately fell in love with Charlie Bucket, and felt compassion for him as he was poor, and did not have much to eat. 

He nibbled on a bar of chocolate and made it last for a month! (So we got a chocolate Kiss and nibbled on it for the entire day.)

Charlie also loved the delicious, sweet aroma of chocolate when he walked by Mr. Wonka's factory. 

We played "Guess the Sweet Smell":

Peppermint

Chocolate

Vanilla

Bubble gum

Cinnamon

Marshmallow

...and caramel!

On Thursday, I hid 5 golden tickets around the room. The kids searched all over...and 4 tickets were found by these lucky winners.

The rest of the class was pretty sad!

There was 1 more ticket left, and that one was found by Jason later on in the day (sorry I didn't take a pic of that!).

On Wednesday, we read about Violet Beauregarde who loved to chew GUM. After the reading, each student got a small piece of bubble gum, and we had a bubble-blowing contest!

They chewed...

...and chewed...

...and chewed some more.

The pieces were pretty small, so it was really hard to blow bubbles! 

Before dismissal time, I told the kids that I contacted the Wonka Company and got 20 miniature Wonka Bars. The assignment was to take it home, open it in front of an adult, and send a picture IF and only if there was a golden ticket inside.

We were not hopeful since the odds were against us. 

To our utter amazement, it turned out that the Oompa-Loompas were quite generous...they filled every Wonka Bar with a miniature golden ticket! 

On Friday, we pretended to be the workers in Wonka's Chocolate Factory, and made our own taffy using marshmallows.

We are looking forward to WEEK 2 of our most fantastical, silly, and imaginative book! We LOVE Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! 

 

ADAPTATIONS SCIENCE LABS

 In science, we have been learning about ADAPTATIONS which are traits that living things have that help them survive. 

We learned that God created so many different types of birds, each with its own unique adaptation that would help them to eat and protect themselves. 

In our lab, we got to explore items that represented the hummingbirds' narrow beak that allow them to drink the sweet nectar. 

There were also items that represented the short, hard beak that cardinals have to help them crack open their seeds to eat the morsels on the inside! 

There were also tongs that represented the sharp, strong eagle's beak that help them capture their prey. 

We used chopsticks to see if we could pick up the "seeds" with the long "beak". We had a competition to see who could pick up 10 seeds the fastest! 

We marveled at the fact that our Lord Jesus cares SO much for even the smallest of birds. He gave them the adaptations in order for them to survive! If Jesus cares THIS MUCH for the sparrow, HOW MUCH MORE will He care for YOU and ME? 

The following week, we did another lab to experience the adaptation of sea lions with a layer of fat to protect them in the cold water. 

First, we stuck our fingers in the cold ice water, and pretended that our fingers were sea lions, swimming in the water. 

Next, we covered our fingers with Vaseline to imitate the adaptation of the layer of fat. 

Finally, the kids dunked their covered fingers into the cold ice water! 

It worked! They couldn't feel a thing! How creative of our God to come up with such an adaptation to help the sea creatures to survive in the cold waters. 

Science truly is an extension of our Bible lessons. We have such an artistic Creator!
